Late last week, UK customs officials caught a cannabis smuggler in the act at London Heathrow Airport, carrying « goods » with a street value of around $900,000.
The US citizen was requested for a routine customs inspection on January 16, 2023 shortly after his arrival from Los Angeles. He told the border guards that he wanted to visit friends at the university. However, a search of his two checked-in suitcases found around 47 kilos of herbal cannabis.
According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), the alleged smuggler is said to be working as a photographer in his homeland. At first he denied that he owned the suitcases. According to the authorities, however, these should have been provided with both self-attached name tags and airline tags, which are supposed to have the opposite part. The 26-year-old man was first questioned by the NCA and then charged with attempted importation of Class B narcotics.
In the meantime, there was also a hearing at Isleworth Crown Court, which is located west of the official capital, London. The American pleaded guilty before the judge and was sentenced to 32 months in prison. He is said to have waived an appeal.
The fact that cannabis has been legalized in some states of the United States of America is a problem for the licensing authority. Again and again travelers try to bring this « stuff » illegally to the UK. Selling prices on the UK black market can be much higher than in the US. According to the NCA, 19 people with US or Canadian citizenship were caught smuggling cannabis in January and February 2023 alone, some of whom have already been charged.
