aviation; Easyjet expands Milan Linate Airport – Aviation.Direct

par Janine RUBIOle 11 décembre 202411 décembre 2024

On December 11, 2024, Easyjet announced a significant expansion of its European operations. The British low-cost airline will launch new routes and additional frequencies from Milan Linate Airport (LIN) from March 30, 2025. This expansion is the result of a strategic agreement signed by Easyjet as the designated buyer of ITA Airways’ slots. In addition to significantly expanding its route network to Great Britain and other European destinations, Easyjet will also set up two new bases in Italy. This expansion could not only further strengthen Easyjet’s position in Europe, but also intensify competition on the affected routes.

Milan’s Linate Airport, the metropolis’ second international airport after Malpensa, has developed into an increasingly important hub for low-cost airlines in recent years. Following the European Commission’s decision to hand over new slots to Easyjet, the airline will now launch two new routes in the UK. From March 30, 2025, Easyjet will fly direct from Linate to Edinburgh and Manchester, strengthening connectivity between the Italian economic hub and key British cities. What is particularly notable is that no airline has served Edinburgh or Manchester from Linate since the end of the pandemic in 2022. This shows the potential Easyjet sees in reviving these routes.

However, the expansion is not just limited to Great Britain. Easyjet will also offer a second daily flight to London Gatwick (LGW), improving connections between Milan and one of Europe’s largest metropolises. These new flights are part of Easyjet’s broader strategy to build its presence in Italy while opening up new markets in Europe.

New bases and aircraft for Easyjet

In addition to adding new routes, Easyjet plans to further strengthen its presence in Italy by establishing two new bases in Milan-Linate and Rome-Fiumicino. From spring 2025, Easyjet will be based in Linate with five Airbus A320 aircraft, while a base with three aircraft will also be opened in Rome Fiumicino. These investments underline the company’s clear expansion course in an important market, which plays a central role due to Italy’s strategic location as a connecting point between Europe and North Africa, the Middle East and Southern Europe.

The decision to invest in these new Italian bases meant strengthening Easyjet not only as a European low-cost airline, but also as a direct competitor to Lufthansa and other established carriers. The expansion of the aircraft fleet to include the latest Airbus A320neo and A321neo models is also intended to further increase Easyjet’s efficiency and capacity.

Expansion of the route network

In addition to the flights to Edinburgh and Manchester, further new connections will be launched from Milan-Linate, which also include important hubs of the Lufthansa Group. The newly announced destinations include flights to Brussels (BRU), Frankfurt (FRA) and Vienna (VIE), which should particularly benefit business travelers. These routes without the profit for the passages are also a clear indication of the increasing competition between the different airlines and the associated market changes.

In addition, Easyjet will also fly to popular leisure destinations such as Ibiza (IBZ), Split (SPU) and Tenerife South (TFS). These new holiday destinations are a further sign of Easyjet’s diversification of its route network and its intention to create attractive offers for both business and leisure travelers.

Another notable element of Easyjet’s expansion in Italy concerns Malpensa Airport in Milan. Easyjet will offer new flights here on Friday: Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Harstad/Narvik. These connections not only strengthen Easyjet’s position in Northern and Central Europe, but also provide additional convenience for travelers who want to reach numerous destinations from a central point in Europe.

Easyjet’s role in the competitive landscape

Easyjet’s expansion in Italy and its collaboration with ITA Airways is also a step in the larger dynamic of the European aviation industry, which is increasingly dominated by the major airlines through strategic alliances and acquisitions. The most interesting aspect of the development is the role of the Lufthansa Group, which had raised competition concerns during its investment in ITA Airways. To address these concerns and obtain approval from the European Commission, Easyjet was brought into the process as a remedial measure. This allows the low-cost airline to expand its presence at the important airports of Linate and Fiumicino while strengthening the competitive environment.

outlook

By creating new bases and expanding the flight network, Easyjet is showing that the low-cost carrier does not just want to be perceived as a pure low-cost airline, but also as a serious competitor in European air traffic. The planned new routes and increased presence in Italian could prove to be a competitive advantage, especially if demand for flights in Europe continues to increase. For passengers, this not only means a greater choice of destinations, but also increased competition, potentially leading to cheaper prices.

With the planned expansion and investments in new bases and aircraft, Easyjet is underlining its expansion course in an increasingly competitive market and positioning itself as one of the leading low-cost airlines in Europe. The next few years could be exciting for the carrier as demand continues to grow in many European markets and the competition becomes increasingly intense.
