This fall, more than 21 million passengers across Europe had difficulties with their flight. Almost every vert passenger was affected by delays or cancellations. In the case of flight cancellations and serious delays of more than three hours, travelers have the right to compensation if the airlines are to blame for the problems.
In Europe, around two million travelers were affected by such serious cases in October – 1.6 million can claim as airlines are responsible for the relevant cases in each case.
“As our analysis shows, things are going to be chaotic at European airports again this October. Not only the lack of staff, i.e. the two Eurowings strikes in Germany, aggravated the situation in autumn. But: many passengers do not know that they can assert a claim of up to 600 euros in the event of far-reaching problems. In Germany alone, around 219,000 travelers are entitled to compensation in October. After Great Britain, this is the second-largest proportion in a European comparison. Affected passengers can check their claim free of charge on our website before they go to the airlines directly or with our help,” explains Julián Navas, legal expert at AirHelp.
Flight problems: These are the rights that passengers have
The amount of the compensation payment is calculated from the length of the flight route. The rightful claim for compensation depends on the actual length of the delay at the destination and the reason for the canceled or delayed flight. Affected passengers can assert their claim for compensation retrospectively, up to three years after their flight date.
Extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather or medical emergencies can. Planned events, such as airline strikes, do not count.
