A 19-year-old man who tried to open the door of a Boeing 737 on a Jeju Air flight on June 19, 2023 faces a long prison sentence. In South Korea, the law for offenses against flight safety does not provide for fines, but for up to ten years in prison.
Recently, a person who opened an emergency exit door during an Asiana Airlines flight’s approach to land caused a worldwide sensation. Just a few weeks later, on June 19, 2023, the incident quickly revived.
A Jeju Air Boeing 737 known en route from Cebu to Seoul-Incheon. Police say the recalcitrant PAX displayed « suspicious behavior » during the flight. He repeatedly complained to the crew that the cabin was « sticky » and made him uncomfortable. The purser then decided to move the passenger to the front row, so that the airline staff would have a better view of them.
That probably wasn’t such a good idea though, as the stubborn PAX had the best view of the front door from row 1, which he then attempted to open. After this was unsuccessful, he is said to have used brute force. However, the door does not open either, because the aircraft is noticeably at an altitude at which opening is simply not possible due to the different air pressure.
Both flight attendants and other passengers intervened immediately and held the 19-year-old until he landed at Incheon Airport. The captain informed air traffic control so that the police could board the Boeing 737 immediately after arrival. The recalcitrant PAX was arrested and brought before a coroner a day later.
In South Korea, violations of aviation security always face imprisonment if convicted, as the law does not provide for fines. Unless a conviction is explicitly stated, the recalcitrant PAX faces up to ten years in prison. In view of the Asiana incident, the court will probably take into account that the Jeju door incident remained an attempt and that an emergency exit door on the Asiana A321 was actually opened on approach for landing a few weeks ago.
